They say distance makes the heart grow fonder … which couldn’t ring truer in friendships.
My long-distance best friend and I get together a few times a year for overdue catch-ups, spontaneous adventures, heart-to-hearts, and of course good food. Back in February, we decided to spend an afternoon on my beloved Ossington Strip and let the day whisk us away.
Located on the West End of Toronto, Ossington is known for its vibrance, lively energy, and trendy scene. Perhaps not Toronto’s most eclectic neighbourhood in comparison to say, Kensington Market, however it remains stylish, cool, and welcomes visitors of all backgrounds. While Toronto has endless attractive neighbourhoods, many of which will be featured on this site, I find myself returning to the same street that claimed my heart several months ago.
To kick off my Kundi and the City summer series, I’ll be taking you along one of my previous Ossington adventures.
12:27pm – Quick Recharge at % Arabica
All great Toronto days begin with some caffeine, right? At least, that’s the philosophy I live by most days I’m on the move. Not on an empty stomach, of course.
In this economy, it’s not always ideal to regularly indulge in $9 lattes, however, the experience of swirling that plastic cup around and hearing the ice cubes brush against each other never gets old. Located at Union Station on the lower level of Bay Concourse, you’ll find % Arabica, a Japanese specialty coffee shop which serves tasty drinks to either kick off or wind down your city commute.

12:50pm – TTC In All Its Glory

1:16pm – Uncle Studios
First stop, Uncle Studios. This retro clothing store feeds your eyes from the moment you walk in. Right away, you’re greeted by the bright green carpet, chic clothing, photo booth, and the stylish employees who work there. Bring a friend or go solo!

1:42pm – Boketto
Far north of Ossington towards Dundas Street West, you’ll find a vintage designer clothing store that leaves you wondering, “maybe one more top… or pair of sunnies.” Each section is beautifully curated, displaying items from renowned designers like Rick Owens, Vivienne Westwood, and Helmut Lang.
Apart from the clothing, accessories, and shoes being the obvious eye candy, the highlight of the store for me is the beautiful skylight. It completely enhances the atmosphere and creates stunning lighting in the fitting rooms.

1:59pm – Rotate This
Thrifting records and CDs is high up on my list of favourite pastimes. There’s no shortage of classics, from Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and John Coltrane, to newer talent like Olivia Dean, Frank Ocean, and Harry Styles. All at reasonable prices too.

2:04pm – KOTN
If you’re a fan of earthy tones and interior design, you may get a kick out of this clothing store nuzzled between Paris Paris and Clocks & Colours. Made from Egyptian cotton, their collections cater to those who enjoy a minimalist look, quality basics, and a range of structured to flowy pieces.

2:35pm – Value Village
As you stroll along Ossington, naturally you’ll find yourself venturing off to either Queen Street West or Dundas Street West, depending on which direction you’re going. This time, we ended up on Queen.
Lunch was calling our name, but first, we had to thrift one last time.

Value Village is one of my favourite places to find one-of-a-kind items at lower prices. Exhibit A: these adorable gingham flats.
3:25pm – Raku
Final stop of the day before parting ways with bestie – Raku, a Japanese restaurant known for its classic, comfort food, and also located in New York City. This is a perfect spot to dine in with friends, a date, or solo if you’re craving a hearty bowl of Japanese delicacy. Also, why does food taste 10x more satisfying using a wooden spoon?
If you end up visiting, please enjoy some Wonton Soup for me!

Stomach full and heart even fuller!
Thank you for following along the first of many Ossington highlights – I hope it gave you a few ideas for your next West-End gallivant. I’ll see you on the next adventure.
Signing off!
Xoxo,
Kundisai Linda
