My makeup routine is pretty short and sweet as I don’t wear much makeup everyday. My go-to makeup products throughout quarantine have been an eyebrow pencil and lip balm. I naturally have thin eyebrows so filling them in gives them the boldness I strive for. I like to keep my makeup minimal because I find myself touching my face and bumping into things a lot, so a bare face gives me the liberty to be my clumsy self. I love to wear natural makeup so the less products I use the better. Another pro of not wearing much makeup every day is that it shrinks my morning and evening routine significantly. I will be the millionth person to preach that less really is more. Not only in skincare but in life. But that’s a conversation for another day.
**Disclaimer**
This is not a sponsored post. All of the makeup products I will be sharing I have used for quite a long time. While they work well for me, they may not work well for others. Before trying a new product I encourage you to always do your research and read reviews.
The essentials

With every great makeup routine comes an even better skincare routine. It’s important to prep your skin by washing and exfoliating it regularly, and keeping it moisturized. Before applying makeup products on my skin I make sure to wash my face, moisturize, and apply sunscreen. I often hear the myth that black people don’t need to wear sunscreen, which isn’t true. Everyone exposed to the sun should be protecting their skin. Click here to read my post about skincare!
Concealer
The Mac Pro Longwear Concealer is my go-to product whenever I want to look a bit more awake and polished. I wear the shade NW55. I apply a tiny amount of concealer underneath my eyebrows to define their arch, under my eyes, and around my lip area.
When I want more coverage, I also apply concealer over any blemishes and obvious scars with my finger and then dab it in lightly. Once the concealer dries, I top it off with the foundation I will describe next!
Foundation
I’ve been using the Mac Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 foundation for about two years now and I love it. I wear the shade NC50. It leaves a dewy finish, so it’s only downside is that it typically rubs off when I wear a mask. Other than that it really does the job for me so I have no complaints.
Eyebrows
I use the Revlon ColorStay Brow Pencil in ‘dark brown’, which I purchased from Walmart and it’s my absolutely favourite! I’m never picky about eyebrow pencils, all I need is a dark brown pencil that fills in my eyebrows nicely. The angled tip of the pencil allows me to make delicate strokes through my eyebrows which makes them appear feathery and natural. After I fill in my eyebrows, I use the brush side of the pencil to comb through and spread out the product evenly.
Eyes

I have a confession. I probably wear mascara 1-3 times a year at best, however, I’m including the Maybelline Great Lash Big Washable Mascara – ‘Blackest Black’ in my makeup routine because it hasn’t let me down! It gives my eyelashes a bit more volume and length. Naturally my eyelashes are quite short, so this mascara gives them the love and attention they deserve.
Lips

Last but not least, the lips! My favourite lipstick at the moment is the NYX Suède Matte Lipstick in the shade Cold Brew. It is so smooth and stays on my lips for a long time! The shade ‘Cold Brew’ is such a beautiful brown.
Make sure you are always caring for your lips underneath the lipstick or lip gloss! I like to exfoliate them at least once a week and moisturize them daily with lip balm or Vaseline. Regular care will maintain the health of your lips, and your favourite products will look much nicer when they are smooth and moisturized!

In direct sunlight, the lip colour looks much brighter. The lipstick shade is actually a lot darker as you can see in the right photo. I usually gravitate towards darker lip colours because I love the way they look on my complexion. This lipstick is matte and leaves a beautiful finish on my lips. If you want the colour to pop add lip gloss or Vaseline overtop for some shine!
